Diesel engines rely on the fuel itself for lubrication of the high pressure pump and injectors. Gasoline has almost none of that lubricity. When gas circulates through a diesel fuel system, even diluted, it strips lubricant from precision parts. Pump damage and injector damage can start within minutes of running the engine.

The reverse is less common but still serious. Diesel does not vaporise the way gas does, so a gas engine with diesel in the tank runs poorly or not at all. The vehicle may sputter, lose power, smoke heavily, and stall. Catalytic converters and oxygen sensors can be damaged by running on the wrong fuel.
The fix is the same idea, just adapted to a gas vehicle. We drain the tank, flush the fuel system as needed, and refill with the right fuel. Stop driving immediately. The further you go on diesel, the more parts you risk having to replace at the shop later.
The single most important rule after a misfuel. If you have not turned the key yet, do not.
